Dear Cynical Friend:

This guy I hooked up with a couple months ago never seemed interested in a relationship, but now he has a new girlfriend. When I saw the relationship go official on Facebook, I swore I was over him, but here's the problem. Every couple of weeks he'll send me a message saying that he misses me and wants to 'hang out.' What's the deal? I'm not a cheater, but I'm still attracted to him.

Confused,

Your F.B. status is: Denial (noun) -- an inability or refusal to admit that something exists.

OK, so that's a little harsh, but the facts seem pretty clear. For some reason that only he knows, your former hookup chose another girl to date 'officially' (according to the law of the holy Facebook). It's time to face the Minifeed and move on. He has a new girlfriend, who is obviously in the dark about her boy's straying ways, but he also knows that you still have feelings for him. He figures he can keep dating her and string you along. Simply stated, he wants a poke buddy.

So stop playing the victim and de-friend this jerk. Next time he messages you with an 'I miss spending time with you,' you have two options: You could respond platonically with, 'You have a girlfriend. I'm not interested.' Or you could release all your pent up frustration with a nasty post about his size. The choice is yours, but you need to put an end to being the girl on the side. Because even if his relationship status returns to single, would you really want to date a cheater? So start looking for someone (single) who's worth your time and energy. If you keep waiting around for someone who's taken, in 10 years you're going to be that woman having an affair with a married man who swears he's going to divorce his wife to be with you. And that situation is even sadder than my addiction to Facebook.
